This site is one of our favourites. A lovely clean, modern design by Mario at JDJ Creative with responsiveness built in from the get-go, this WordPress site is for the Society for the History of Natural History – ” a friendly international society for everyone who is interested in natural history in the broadest sense”. And friendly they are! What a lovely, lovely client.
One of the biggest challenges with this site was the sheer weight of content! The Society has been running a long while, and – as archiving is a big part of what they do – they keep everything. It’s great to be a part of maintaining this archive for future generations, but it certainly presents challenges – not least designing and building the site so it’s easy to navigate!
Mario did a great job (as ever) designing a structure with plenty of navigation elements across the page. To build the navigation, we made good use of WordPress nav menus – allowing the site’s editors complete control over every menu on the site, including the cumulative index of past journals. Nav menus are one of our most used and one of the most underrated functions of WordPress. A site is nothing without good navigation to help people find the content they need.
Migration was also an issue, so we developed several custom scripts to crawl the current site, importing content in to WordPress, as well as pulling content from the old site’s database. This greatly reduced the time taken to import the old content, but our meticulous nature also meant a couple of late nights checking and fixing formatting and links!
Overall we’re amazingly proud of this site and how we could help a small society get a big online presence.
